My Passion Project-Mystic Mutts of Revelry- Fairhope, AL

My Passion Project – Mystic Mutts of Revelry | Fairhope, Alabama

Back in 2009, my mom was watching the news. The segment that was being aired was the “Pet of the Week”. She saw this cute little chocolate, short haired dog named Cocoa. She immediately sent me a photo.

Cocoa as

My family and I are dachshund people and at quick glance of the photo Cocoa looks like a sweet chocolate dachshund (I know, he really doesn’t but use your imagination). I couldn’t stand it. A sweet baby as cute as he is in a shelter, with no human or furever home!!!

That day, I decided I NEEDED Cocoa! Cocoa was located in Anniston, AL. I called the shelter as soon as I could and made sure he hadn’t been adopted yet before setting off on my adventure. The next day, I hopped in the car and drove to Anniston to meet Cocoa. He and I were instant friends and after a couple hours of hanging out and jumping through several hoops. Cocoa was ALL mine (and Braxton’s, much to his dislike). Cocoa is my buddy. It is like he is grateful that I picked him up that day. He is so sweet and docile. Cocoa also came with a few issues. He has separation anxiety and is not a fan of bad weather. I have several entertaining stories I could share but that will be for another day.

Cocoa led me to my Passion Project.

Fast forward several years (2015), my sister- in- law recruited me to photograph a photo booth with a local Mardi Gras parade. This parade, Mystic Mutts of Revelry, benefits a local no-kill animal shelter called The Haven.

The parade is so much fun to watch and participate in with your children and animals. It is a walking parade around the streets of the beautiful Fairhope, Alabama. The dogs and humans come dressed in typical carnival costumes or costumes related to each year theme. Spectators line the streets to view the parade and catch throws. If you haven’t witnessed the Mystic Mutts of Revelry parade before, make it a must this year!

The 15th Annual Mystic Mutts of Revelry pet parade presented by McSharry’s Irish Pub will be walking the streets in Fairhope on Saturday, February 3, 2018. The parade will begin at 1:00 pm starting at the Fairhoper’s Community Park located on the corner of S. Church Street and Morphy Avenue. Walkers can pre-register online or at the hospitality tent on parade day. Preregister today to opt in for a chance for your pet to be “Royal for a Day” ($10 per ticket), and you and your pet may just get to be part of the Royal Court and ride on the float during the parade!!! Register for our “Best Float (wagon or stroller) Contest”, $10 entry fee, and winning float gets $100!!

Join us Fairhoper’s Community Park at 10:30am on February 3, 2018 to take a selfie at the selfie booth, enjoy music from DJ Clary and watch as the carnival rolls into the park.

I am Jessica Smith. I am a wedding and portrait photographer based in Spanish Fort, Alabama. Born and raised in Alabama, I have lived on the Gulf Coast for the most of my life. After adventures with my husband’s job in the Coast Guard, we decided it was time to follow our hearts and settle down back on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay. Being from Fairhope, my southern heritage is apparent from the time you meet me. My southern “twang” and my love of Alabama football are the giveaways. I am a wife and a mother to three gorgeous sons. I also love to garden and promoting wellness in the world.
